SEAToday.com, Brebes-Traveling by road can be tiring, especially during Eid homecoming, which often would have a heavy traffic flow. Some travels could even take more than 10 hours.
That is why it is important to take a break, stretch your limbs after hours of sitting in the car, and explore rest areas nearby for some snacks and souvenirs. One of the places to go to during your trip across Java is the rest area called Heritage in Brebes, Central Java.
Apart from being unique, this area is designed with a different concept from other rest areas as it utilizes the cultural heritage of a Dutch sugar factory building.
Historically, the sugar factory was built in 1908 by a Dutch plantation company. After going bankrupt in 1997, the sugar factory complex which stood on an area of 10.5 hectares was designated as a cultural heritage building.
Various local food and snacks are being sold here, such as different types of eggs, including salted egg which is one of the most popular local products in Brebes, Central Java. Visitors could also find unique crafts and souvenirs such as paintings, clay utensils, and kitchenware.
The retro shape of peeling brick walls, and an old tree growing out of the wall make this rest area iconic and Instagramable. The management still maintains two sugar cane milling machines and an old locomotive to make the rest area look more artistic.
This rest area is also equipped with various facilities for drivers to rest including massage chairs.
On top of that, to facilitate traveler’s green homecoming journey, the rest area is also supported by electric vehicle charging stations and a bottle bank to collect single-use plastic bottles to recycle.
