SEAToday.com, Jakarta - The Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI) has urged parents to avoid giving their children sugary snacks and fast-digesting carbohydrates during Eid homecoming, as these can negatively impact their health.

"As we know, mudik often makes parents more lenient when it comes to their children's diet, leading to the frequent consumption of sugary snacks and drinks just to keep them calm," said IDAI Chairman, Dr. Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, as quoted on Antara, on Monday.

Dr. Piprim highlighted that many parents opt for packaged snacks as travel provisions. However, excessive sugar intake can weaken a child's immune system, as high sugar levels can reduce the function of neutrophils (immune cells) by up to 40% just hours after consumption.

Common travel snacks such as white bread, biscuits, and excessive portions of white rice contain fast-digesting carbohydrates that can spike blood sugar levels. This can lead to weakened immunity, digestive issues, and even hyperactivity in children.

"When blood sugar spikes, children experience a short burst of energy but then quickly become hungry again. This can lead to tantrums and fussiness. In the long run, frequent consumption of high-sugar and processed carbs can contribute to early metabolic syndrome," Dr. Piprim warned.

To ensure children stay healthy and energized during travel, Dr. Piprim recommends packing high-protein foods such as eggs, chicken, fish, and beef. These can be prepared as travel-friendly meals like boiled eggs, fried fish, or rendang.

Traditional Indonesian snacks like lemper or arem-arem, which are made from sticky rice filled with protein-rich ingredients, are also great options as they are nutritious, filling, and easy to eat.

"Protein-rich foods help stabilize blood sugar levels, support tissue repair, strengthen the immune system, and keep children full longer during the trip," Dr. Piprim explained.

He emphasized that homemade meals are the best option, urging parents to avoid junk food, limit sugar intake, and prioritize fresh, nutritious foods.

With this in mind, parents are encouraged to plan ahead, pack healthy food options, and prioritize their children’s well-being during the journey.
